Adverse Credit Cards

For many consumers with a good credit rating the ability to apply for, and use a credit card, is very much taken for granted. Generally customers use competitive 0% or low interest rate credit card deals to allow them to spread payments of large purchases with out paying large interest rates as well as giving the ability to take a short term loan without any notice. Credit card users tend to fall into 3 categories;

1) Customers who settles there balance every month in full.

2) Customers who uses credit card for tactical purchased and spread payments.

3) Customers who run credit card to it's credit limit and only ever make minimum payments.

Those who fall in to category 3 rarely pay off their balance, as they are effectively paying the interest and a very small contribution to the outstanding loan. For the banks this is the most profitable profile of customer, however this behavior does not make economic sense for the consumer.

However there are many other benefits to owning a credit card other than the ability to borrow money and these often go unnoticed by users.

Benefits include;

  • Ability to use millions of locations worldwide
  • Ability to travel cash free
  • Allows customers to hire cars and pre-book hotel rooms
  • Allows secure and safe shopping online
  • Helps business customers manage traveling expenses

For consumers with an adverse credit history (ccj's, defaults, arrears etc) being declined for a credit card effectively means they can not gain the advantages of a credit card.

We often receive emails from customers who work ''on the road'' as sales representatives who are looking for a credit card simply to allow them to conduct their work life more efficiently.

Cards for those with adverse credit

Thankfully there are now 2 options to help consumers gain a credit card, even with a poor history, allowing them to gain the majority of the benefits.

1) Prepaid Credit Cards: Basically a pay as you go option where consumer pre loads the credit card, there are generally no credit checks or declines as a result.

2) Adverse Credit Card: Operates like a standard card with a credit limit and monthly statement, but lenders take a more flexible approach to applicants with an adverse credit past. Customers normally commence with a small limit at first which is reviewed in the future. Unlike prepaid credit cards there is still a credit check procedure which a customer may fail.
